OmniViewer lets you access most Internet information services in
a viewer. OmniViewer has two kinds of viewers: a horizontal scrolling
ticker viewer similar to a traditional ticker tape, and a vertical
scrolling list of headlines, called a headliner viewer. OmniViewer
refreshes the information every 20 minutes by default, or you can
specify how frequently you want to update each service separately.
OmniViewer ships with a wide variety of profiles that let you load
many of the most popular information services, such as the New York
Times, the Wall Street Journal, various Yahoo news sites, and many
more. These profiles contain a script that tells the OmniViewer engine
how to extract text from the information service's web pages.
All you
have to do is drop a profile onto a ticker (or the Ticker button to
start a new ticker) or a headliner (or the Headliner button to open a
new viewer). Alternatively, you can run a wizard that will take care
of loading profiles for you.
Hold your cursor over a headline – if the service provides
summary information for stories, the summary displays in a popup
viewer. Click a headline to open the story in an internal browser. You
can choose to use the internal lightweight browser that comes with
OmniViewer, or use your favorite web browser to read a story.
OmniViewer lets you create searches so you can keep up on your
favorite company, sport, hobby, or other interest. You can also set
alerts for specific words or phrases, so OmniViewer will trigger an
alert when a story of interest comes over a newswire.
Novice users can modify a profile's search variables to find
stories about their special interests. Advanced users can create
profiles for additional web sites either by using a wizard or by
writing their own scripts. You can customize OmniViewer on your
desktop in a variety of ways.
